It is extremely important to take supplements on a regular basis to achieve and maintain optimal health. Most of us validate the benefits of our supplements when we let the program lapse for a few weeks. |
Supplements are often called “nutriceuticals”, since they have both nutritional and pharmaceutical properties. The main difference between supplements and drugs are: · They are naturally occurring; · They take longer to work, but once they work, they work longer and deeper · Their effect is more subtle—sometimes you don’t realize they’re working until they are discontinued for a while and symptoms recur. · Much higher benefit/risk ratio · Cheaper than drugs (though because they are not “covered” by insurance, they may seem more expensive) · Safer with less side effects · Help heal several conditions at once Because of their important biochemical properties, Dr. Cheikin considers the quality of the supplements to be of equal importance to the quality of drugs. Unfortunately, supplements are not regulated as tightly as drugs, so using reputable companies, many of which use external labs to verify quality and potency, is extremely important. |
Dr. Cheikin has spent thousands of hours studying biochemistry and nutrition (since receiving Honors in Biochemistry and Physiology in medical school), and hundreds of hours evaluating numerous products, the companies that produce them, as well as the Holistic, Chinese and Ayurvedic principles that guide their use. He keeps a very specific formulary of products that are based, in order of priority, on: quality (purity, absorbability), price, and convenience (capsules rather than tablets, bottles that last at least a month). Dr. Cheikin takes these same supplements himself and recommends them to his family, friends, staff and colleagues. He frequently changes the formulary after he has evaluated new and improved products that become available on a regular basis. |
Be cautious of similar products on the web or in local stores. If cheaper supplements would do the job (as some do), they would be in his formulary. Most patients see significant improvement in a matter of months. For the $20 dollars per month that one might save (not including the time on research), the risk of sub-optimal response (and wasting precious time and other resource) is not worth it. |
Since supplements are provided as a convenience to our patients, we cannot accept returns or provide refunds. Exceptions are granted when there is a problem with quality (which is very rare). |
For the convenience of our patients, we can mail supplements on a routine and urgent basis. However, for your safety, we will only do this for three months after your appointment with Dr. Cheikin. |
Some supplements can be dangerous if continued without monitoring; and others can be poorly absorbed and need follow-up testing to be sure that the pills you are swallowing are actually getting into your body. Sub-optimal absorption of certain nutrients is very common and may be the cause of sub-optimal response. Very often malabsorption is a clue to maldigestion, even when there is not any symptoms of gastro-intestinal dysfunction. |
We routinely mail refills every Wednesday for those who have called or emailed their refill request by Monday noontime. There is an additional charge for shipping and handling, and non-swipe use of credit card. These charges are often less than the cost of gas and your time. |
On an urgent basis, we also mail refills other days of the week and can use FedEx for an additional charge. |
